Pairs of best college friends, Shen Rong (Brigitte Lin) and Li Lun Mei (Chen Qiuxia); Chen Zhen Xiong (Chin Han) and Fang Rui (Alan Tam) meet at the tennis courts. Fang Rui likes the ebullient Li Lun Mei, but after hearing the contemplative Zhen Xiong at a school concert, is smitten by his talents and looks. However, as fate would have it, Zhen Xiong is after the studious and gentler Shen Rong.
At a beach barbeque, Zhen Xiong tells Shen Rong that they've been wrongly paired up, that she is the one he truly likes. Not wanting to hurt her best friend, Shen Rong tells Zhen Xiong that they cannot hurt Li Lun Mei, but it's too late. Fang Rui has also revealed his feelings for Lun Mei and she storms off angrily.
Shen Rong tries to patch up her friendship with Li Lun Mei and finally promises her she wouldn't have a boyfriend till after she graduates. Shen Rong lives with her mother, who washes and irons table cloths for a living. Lun Mei wants revenge for the callous way Zhen Xiong has treated her feelings so hatches a plan to hurt him back. To do this, Shen Rong must make Zhen Xiong fall hopelessly in love with her, then break his heart by saying her mother wants her to marry a neighbour in San Francisco. Because of this lie, Shen Rong is miserable and eventually leaves home due to the shame she feels in deceiving everybody.
In the end, Shen Rong's mother is unconscious in the hospital and the three friends scurry about looking for the missing Shen Rong. Zhen Xiong finds Shen Rong in Kao Shiong working in a hotel and they rush back to the hospital together. Her mother wakes to an apologetic and filial daughter crying at her bedside.
A light-hearted Saturday afternoon matinee. The unmistakable pairing of Chin Han and Lin Ching Hsia is inevitable but it's still fun to see how the mismatched pairing begins. There are many Brigitte Lin signature moments in the movie--her coy smile, the look of indignance, her helplessness at the impossible situation, and of course, her repentance when she finally realises her mistake. It is no wonder why Taiwanese movies like these are successful since the formulas don't vary by much. There is a lovely scene where Chin Han is watching Brigitte read a book and all she does is look up and smile. But it is enough for the twenty-six year old Brigitte Lin is a sight to behold; subtle acting and beauty is are the film's major draw. The other supporting actors do well to keep the story going but unfortunately, the very fresh-faced Alan Tang is very much himself.
Trivia: Gui Yalei played Brigitte Lin's onscreen mother in Burn Phoenix Burn, and Love on the beach and her commanding officer in Women Soldiers.
