The stage is set for tragedy when a school girl, Tang Junli becomes the victim of a car accident In the years that ensue, Li Huifen (played by Brigitte Lin) , the young daughter of the driver who had struck Tang continues to visit the unfortunate victim, now sadly in a vegetative state.
Enter suave and flirtatious playboy Xiao Zhangyun (played by Chin Han) who rips the seat of his pants when retrieving his car keys. Huifen graciously offers her umbrella to shield the offending tear and Zhangyun is all agog at this young woman's affectious generosity. Coincidentally, Huifen is applying for the job of typist at Zhangyun's office. As the superintendant and the heir to his father's company, Zhangyun naturally handpicks Huifen.
Their relationship begins amiably, romance blossoming in a predictable courtship via driving lessons Zhangyun gives Huifen. Zhangyun's ex-schoolmate Hou Jun finds it hard to believe that Zhangyun has found the girl of his dreams. To prove his sincerity, Zhangyun gives Huifen a car as a gift. Huifen accepts the gift but sells it away, using the proceeds of the sale to donate towards the medical expenses of the girl her father struck down over ten years ago. Huifen's mother works as a housekeeper in the Xiao family and disapproves of Huifen asking Zhangyun for financial aid since their debt should not involve anyone else.
Ashamed of using Zhangyun, Huifen quits her clerical job and becomes a model in a fashion house. She changes her name to Chen Meilan and catches the roving eye of Hou Jun who gives up his playboy days for her too. During a fashion show, both Zhangyun and Hou Jun stake their claim on her as his girlfriend. When Hou Jun offers Meilan a 5-carat diamond ring as a token of his affection, Meilan pawns it away and donates NT200,000 in Hou's name to Tang Junli.
When Hou Jun finds out, he confronts Meilan but he is stopped by two men in trenchcoats. It turns out that Meilan's brother Xiao Gang is back after being adopted by a foster family. He repays all the family's debts and promises the take care of Tang Junli's medical expenses and her family.
Zhangyun and Huifen marry, driving their faulty volkswagon beetle into a ditch and kissing at the close of the film.
A fairly enjoyable afternoon matinee. There are some funny moments when Brigitte Lin learns to drive from Chin Han.
