Brigitte stars as Tsai Chin and Chin Han as Shu Pei. Tsai Chin and Shu Pei are childhood sweethearts. Tsai Chin is the daughter of the 2nd wife. Her father, his 1st wife and half-brother are mean to her and do not allow her to date Shu Pei who is an art student from a poor family. Tsai Chin leaves her town when her father is caught for smuggling. She is forced to marry a lawyer who demands marriage to her in exchange for her father's freedom. Unfortunately, her father is imprisoned, the lawyer has a 1st wife and thus the sacrifice is pointless. Tsai Chin leaves the lawyer and goes back to Shu Pei. They set up house together and it was a tough time for them to live on his scholarship money. Shu Pei tries to earn money as a tutor but failed as the kids were really naughty and his confidence takes a deep fall. Meanwhile, Tsai Chin earns money playing the organ and singing in the restaurant which Shu Pei is not too happy about. Tsai Chin meets Shu Pei's classmates and her confidence also takes a deep fall as she did not graduate from high school and lacks purity and social status. Her confidence also takes another dive as her fellow entertainer (who is in love with her) discourages her from having a relationship with Shu Pei due to their cohabitation status. As her half-brother is in debt, she has to work longer hours when her half-brother threatens to beat Shu Pei if she fails to provide the money. Both Lin Ching Hsia and Chin Han were pretty convincing as lovers. Lin Ching Hsia was convincing both as high school student and adult. Chin Han looked too adult for a high school student but looked convincing as an undergraduate. Although she sings in the show, I don't think its her voice. Many of the scenes are at dawn or dusk with a rosy sky as backdrop.
Another romantic movie that pulls at the heartstrings. Typical of her movies from the 1970s.
